Easy Steps to Motivate Your Employees

We all like to be acknowledged for our accomplishments, but for thousands and perhaps millions of employees, day after day goes by and they receive no positive feedback for their contribution.

If you’re the boss, you can change all this! You can praise them and tell them that you appreciate them, and it will pay unlimited benefits back to your company.

The Story of Marlena

When Marlena was nineteen, she entered the world of work ready to climb to the top. A positive young woman, she believed that hard work, genuine enthusiasm, and an honest willingness to learn and go beyond expectations would be enough.

Her hopes were soon crushed by a supervisor who believed that criticism and threats were essential to motivation. Marlena felt she was unsuitable for the job, but she worked hard for two years. The supervisor eventually knocked the self-confidence out of her until she became cynical and sarcastic. It took a while for her to get up the courage to look for another job, but she did.

On her first day at the new job, it was different. Her supervisor recognized her potential and let her know it. She even said, “Well done.” Encouraged, Marlena went home from work that day believing in herself again.

In the busy workplaces, too often there seems to be no time to say “Well done.” Yet we all know how we feel when we are praised. It costs nothing and only takes a moment to recognize a worker’s accomplishments, but it makes a big difference to the worker.

For Marlena, tomorrow would be a good day because the work culture was supportive and enlightened. The company would benefit from her contribution throughout the years she would provide her services.

Because she was valued, she valued the company and wanted to contribute more to it. She liked being a team player, worked well when delegated tasks, and offered constructive ideas about how to improve business. Two little words, “Well done” was all that it took to encourage her to develop her potential.
