Award Plaques Increase Motivation
One of the most
important things an employer can do to sustain
or improve productivity is to acknowledge
employees.
A renowned behaviorist, Frederick Hertzberg,
set out to explore his theory on motivation by
finding out what truly motivated employees to
perform well. In particular, he wanted to
understand what made one employee do better than
another employee when both had about the same
skills, experience, education, and background.
What he discovered might seem obvious to most of
us, but it was surprising to employers and
managers. As it turns out, employees not only
enjoy being acknowledged, but they perform
better over the long term when they receive
acknowledgment. Acknowledgment elicits genuine
motivation. If you’re an employer or manager,
are you acknowledging the contributions of your
workers? What are you doing to increase their
motivation to do well?
The Value of Awards
Rewarding employees is one effective way to
acknowledge their contributions as individuals.
Smart employers find ways to incorporate various
incentives and awards into job descriptions.
They give it the atmosphere of a game. For
example, at quarterly meetings, managers often
hand out award plaques to the top performers in
the company, thus providing them with tangible
proof of their value as employees that they can
show to their friends and family. Recognition
that can be displayed gives mediocre performers
the incentive to perform better and gives top
performers a reason to continue performing well.
Giving a cash bonus along with the reward helps,
too; however, Hertzberg's research suggests that
a cash bonus alone doesn’t work as well as
acknowledgment of the individual’s achievements.
Money doesn’t last, but good feelings do. Being
acknowledged lives on in memory and is embodied
in the physical award. You cannot put a monetary
value on acknowledgment. Too often employees
feel undervalued and easily replaced. They want
to know for sure that they are making a
contribution and that their work is appreciated.
